TRUCK COLOR

8 1/2 x 11 1/2 inches. India ink and watercolor on 140 lb. cold-press paper.

Above is the main art item I worked on in April. The genesis is a technique that I read about in a watercolor tips magazine about creating extremely well-defined contrasting values in a painting.
The
procedure is to use waterproof india ink to articulate the darkest value in a composition and then paint the colors right on top of that for “mid values”. The lightest value would be anything that you left in white. I didn’t leave much in white.

I’m going to post below scans of the steps involved in creating this (because I was very satisfied with all of my steps):

1. Photos taken by me of old derelict trucks or construction equipment.

2. Layout idea done in pencil on tracing paper.

3. Layout of areas to be totally black, also done in pencil on tracing paper.

4. Design transferred to 140 lb. paper, with ink and first colors added (the sky).

With that piece of work completed I then did a sketch of the old Train Station on the bike path where I go to walk sometimes:

6 x 10 inches. Ink and watercolor on 90 lb. drawing paper in my sketchbook.

Then another drawing in my sketchbook, of a different view of that abandoned red truck:

I decided to include here the results of a four hour workshop I took part in called “Zen approach to landscape in watercolor” with nine other participants.

I was unsatisfied with what I did in that class, and none of the stuff I worked on feels complete or worthy of more attention. The largest of the exercises in the group photo below are 10 1/2 x 13 3/4 inches on 140 lb. paper:

Again, thanks for looking at my images friends!
